Kisii:Renowned lawyer Danstan Omari has called on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to abandon his presidential ambitions and instead support President William Ruto in his bid for a second term in the 2027 General Election.
According to Kenya News Agency, Omari emphasized that Matiang’i lacks the political support of key politicians and opposition figures, which could lead to his isolation as new political alliances form ahead of the elections.
Omari pointed out that neither former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua nor the emerging Linda Mwananchi political movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, considers Matiang’i central to their political strategies. He mentioned that Gachagua may still hold a grudge against Matiang’i due to the police deployment to his residence during his time in government.
Omari further noted that more leaders associated with Matiang’i might shift their allegiance to Ruto, highlighting Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka’s recent political realignment as an indication of growing uncertainty within Matiang’i’s support network. Onyonka, previously a vocal supporter of Matiang’i, has joined the Linda Mwananchi faction as its treasurer, raising questions about cohesion within Matiang’i’s camp.
Omari argued that the interests of the Gusii community would be better served by participating in the government rather than remaining in opposition, emphasizing the influence of larger tribes in the country’s politics. Matiang’i has garnered significant political attention, particularly in Kisii and Nyamira counties, with sections of the Abagusii community backing his candidacy for a stronger voice in national leadership. His supporters have focused on his government experience, administrative record, and ability to manage public institutions.
