Kiambu Unveils Landmark Agroecology Policy to Promote Sustainable Farming

Kiambu:In a significant move towards modernizing agriculture and protecting environmental resources, the County Government of Kiambu has officially launched the Kiambu County Agroecology Policy. The unveiling took place during a high-profile ceremony at Ndumberi Stadium in Kiambu Sub-county.

According to Kenya News Agency, the event was led by Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika and County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, Wilfred Mwenda Kiara. They addressed a gathering of local farmers, agricultural experts, civil society leaders, and community stakeholders, emphasizing that the policy represents a strong commitment to transforming regional food systems into climate-resilient and ecologically sound frameworks.

The policy outlines a strategic plan to promote agroforestry, permaculture, organic farming, and soil conservation by leveraging natural ecological processes instead of chemical inputs. This approach aims to revive soil fertility, secure water catchments, and preserve Kiambu’s biodiversity. Deputy Governor Kirika highlighted the need to support smallholder farmers against challenges like unpredictable weather and rising input costs, asserting that agroecology can enhance food sovereignty and farm productivity.

CECM Mwenda Kiara thanked development partners and community leaders for their collaboration in drafting the policy. He emphasized the Department of Agriculture’s readiness to provide technical guidance, capacity-building workshops, and extension services to support the transition to agroecology.

The celebration concluded with the rallying call, ‘Roho Ndiyo Hiyo,’ reflecting Kiambu’s dedication to healthy soils, thriving communities, and a resilient food system. The policy’s adoption of natural processes over synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is expected to yield healthy food and sustainable agricultural practices for future generations.
