Nakuru County Achieves Record Revenue Growth Through Reforms

Nakuru:Nakuru County’s Own Source Revenue (OSR) saw a significant increase of 47.7 percent, growing by Sh1.75 billion in the last financial year. This rise marks an improvement from Sh3.65 billion in 2023/2024 to Sh5.4 billion in 2024/2025, exceeding targets set by the county administration.

According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Susan Kihika credited the County Assembly for its legislative support and oversight, which ensured proper use of resources and successful project implementation. The governor highlighted the shift to a fully cashless revenue collection system as a key factor in this revenue growth, which has enhanced accountability and financial management.

The reforms introduced by the county, such as the cashless system, have bolstered revenue performance by streamlining collection processes and diversifying income sources. These efforts have not only supported Nakuru’s economic growth but have also reinforced the county’s commitment to sustainability and public sector reform.

Governor Kihika emphasized that the increased revenue collection allows greater investment in public services and infrastructure, ultimately improving living standards for Nakuru’s residents. She noted that the county’s digital transformation has boosted public confidence and secured revenue collection.

Reforms such as the Unified Business Permit have reduced bureaucracy, lowered compliance costs, and encouraged business expansion. These changes, alongside the digitization of revenue collection, have increased transparency and efficiency, making it easier for residents and businesses to fulfill their obligations.

The county’s record revenue collection is expected to strengthen its fiscal position, allowing for critical development projects and reducing dependence on national government transfers. Governor Kihika underscored the importance of counties becoming financially self-reliant and adopting best practices in revenue administration to achieve similar success.
