Mbeere: Leonard Muthende of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has emerged victorious in the Mbeere North Parliamentary by-election, securing the seat with a narrow victory. Muthende garnered 15,802 votes, narrowly defeating Newton Karish of the Democratic Party (DP), who received 15,308 votes.

According to Kenya News Agency, Duncan Mbui of the Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) finished in a distant third position, obtaining 2,480 votes in a competitive race that saw nine candidates vying for the seat. The official results were announced by the Constituency Returning Officer, John Kinyua, at 5 am at the temporary Constituency tallying center located at St. Bhakita Siakago Girls High School.

The by-election was characterized as a two-horse race featuring a showdown between the government and opposition forces. The contest highlighted a supremacy battle over control of the Mt. Kenya East Region, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua actively involved in campaigning. Both political figures spent the previous week in the area, rallying support for their respective candidates.

Gachagua has asserted his position as the preeminent leader of the Mt. Kenya region, while Kindiki claimed seniority as the most influential politician from the area. Each vowed to prove their dominance in this mini poll. The government urged voters to elect a pro-government candidate to facilitate development, whereas the opposition argued that the area had suffered from neglect and unfulfilled promises, advocating for a break from the ruling government.

The voting process was reportedly marred by numerous allegations of voter bribery and instances of chaos, with both camps accusing each other of misconduct. It remains uncertain whether the opposition will accept the election results.
