Second Mpox Case Emerges in Homa Bay County

Mumbuni: The second case of Mpox disease has been reported in Homa Bay County, prompting health personnel to take action to prevent further spread of the disease. The first case involved a 41-year-old man, while the latest case is a 44-year-old male from Ndhiwa Sub-County, who had been working as an invigilator for KCSE examinations at Okok Secondary School. Both patients are reported to be clinically stable and isolated.

According to Kenya News Agency, the county government, led by Spokesperson Atieno Otieno, has implemented several measures to address the situation, including rapid case finding, investigation, and contact tracing. Otieno also noted that a multi-sectoral coordination team is managing the response efforts. Community Health Promoters are actively engaged in household surveillance and health education to curb the disease’s spread.

The government is collaborating with various agencies such as the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and Kenya Red Cross for technical assistance. Other organizations, including the Centre for Disease Control and M©decins Sans Fronti¨res (Doctors Without Borders), have also been involved in the response efforts.

Residents are advised to avoid close contact with individuals displaying Mpox symptoms, which include rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes. The county government emphasizes the importance of seeking prompt medical attention for anyone exhibiting signs of the disease. Additionally, any unusual illness patterns observed in schools, markets, churches, workplaces, or communities should be reported immediately.
