Embu:Embu County Commissioner Morris Wanyonyi has mandated the immediate closure of unregistered bars and liquor outlets in rural areas as part of the government’s increased efforts to combat illicit and counterfeit alcohol in the Mt. Kenya Region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Wanyonyi voiced concerns during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations at Kithimu Primary School about the rising number of liquor outlets in villages. He suggested that there might be collusion between some County Government Licensing Officials and operators of unregistered liquor outlets. He called for investigations into these alleged irregularities, warning that such practices could hinder efforts to control the sale and consumption of counterfeit alcohol.
The County Commissioner also assured continued government support for Chiefs and Local Administrators in their fight against illicit brews. He urged them to remain vigilant and take decisive action against individuals suspected of selling illegal and potentially lethal alcoholic concoctions. Wanyonyi emphasized the importance of collaboration between Security Agencies and Local Administrators to protect communities from the dangers posed by these hazardous brews.
Additionally, County Assembly of Embu Majority Leader Murithi Kobole called on the County Liquor Licensing Board to audit all liquor outlets to identify those selling counterfeit liquors. Speaking at a separate event, Kobole, who is also the Mbeti North Ward MCA, highlighted the issue of outlets contravening laws by stocking second-generation liquor alongside genuine products. He urged for a crackdown on such outlets to prevent them from deceiving consumers and evading law enforcement. Kobole stressed the need for decisive action to address the issue and protect the youth from the dangers of illicit liquor.
