Uasin gishu: The Uasin County government has launched a pilot fortified, high-nutritional uji program to boost early childhood development and education in the area. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the devolved unit, complementing existing efforts like the ECDE milk program aimed at enhancing child nutrition and learning outcomes.
According to Kenya News Agency, the program was inaugurated at Legetet ECDE in Megun Ward, Kapseret Sub County, by Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii. The initiative is set to be rolled out weekly as a pilot before its potential expansion to other ECDE centers throughout the county. Dr. Bii emphasized the goal of ensuring every child benefits from proper nutrition to support healthy growth and effective learning.
The fortified uji initiative works alongside the county’s school milk program, which has operated consistently every Tuesday and Thursday for the last three years. This program has led to a significant increase in ECDE enrollment, rising from 40,000 to 52,000 learners countywide. Governor Bii highlighted the success of the milk program as evidence that investments in child nutrition yield tangible results, evidenced by improved attendance and higher enrollment, fostering parental trust in the government’s commitment to their children’s well-being.
Governor Bii also noted efforts to support ECDE teachers by confirming over 1,466 of them on permanent and pensionable terms, acknowledging their crucial role in early childhood education. Additionally, the county government is enhancing learning environments by constructing 98 classrooms and 28 offices, reducing congestion, and improving teaching conditions. These investments are part of the broader vision to provide every child with a strong foundation for success, ensuring no child is left behind.
