Sameta: Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Eliud Lagat has commissioned the Igare police station in Sameta Sub-County, Kisii County to improve public safety and efficiency of law enforcers in the region. The facility, funded by the Bobasi National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) kitty, was opened in a ceremony attended by the officials from the National Police Service.
According to Kenya News Agency, DIG Lagat lauded the area Member of Parliament, Innocent Obiri, for spearheading the initiative, emphasizing that it will enhance security and boost the morale of police officers working at the station. He highlighted the transformation from a police post to a fully-fledged station, crediting the NG-CDF’s support through the MP for Bobasi. Lagat also cautioned against the use of young people to propagate criminal activities and urged community leaders to engage the youth in transformative economic activities.
Nyanza Region Police Commander Gisiri Nyamohanga expressed concern over increasing cases of gender-based violence in the region, particularly defilement and rape cases among school-going girls. Nyamohanga urged the community to protect girls and women, advocating for alternative conflict resolution methods to address violence among men and women.
The National Chairman NG-CDF Board, Olago Aluoch, encouraged mutual relationships between the local community and police officers for effective service delivery. Aluoch noted the board’s ongoing efforts in funding police station constructions after approval from the Police Headquarters.
Area MP Innocent Obiri stated that his office supported the police station’s construction to ensure resident safety during business activities. Obiri noted the previous long distance to the nearest police station and pledged continued collaboration with police officers and community members to reduce crime cases.
Igare police station is the 35th to be commissioned in Kisii County as part of the National Police Service’s efforts to bring services closer to the people.
