Salama:Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has expressed condolences to the families of the 17 Catholic pilgrims who perished in a road crash at Salama on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway in Mukaa Subcounty. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning.
According to Kenya News Agency, the governor reiterated his call for the national government to dual the heavily trafficked highway to prevent further accidents. He also extended his condolences to the Catholic Church, emphasizing the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
Governor Kilonzo urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement safety improvements at Salama. He highlighted the necessity for the area to receive the same level of attention as other hazardous sections like Salgaa and Nithi Bridge. Kilonzo made these remarks at a fundraiser for a Rectory at Utangwa Catholic Parish in Mbooni West Subcounty.
Additionally, he advocated for a Trauma Centre along the highway to offer emergency medical care to crash victims. The governor stressed the importance of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, noting its role in supporting the national economy and facilitating road users from across the country and neighboring regions.
In terms of development, Kilonzo expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for its support of local development projects. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to continuing the implementation of projects in sectors such as water and energy in the area.
