Nyeri:The eagerly anticipated El Niño rains are expected to begin as early as this Thursday in several parts of Nyeri County, according to predictions by the Kenya Meteorological Services Authority (KMSA).
According to Kenya News Agency, KMSA Director for Nyeri County, Peter Wambugu, forecasts a high likelihood of the county experiencing initial showers towards the end of this week. The intensity of the rains is expected to increase in the following weeks. Most of the rainfall is anticipated to occur from the second and third week of October and continue until January next year.
The KMSA’s weather outlook for October-November-December predicts above-average rainfall for most of the country, except for Turkana and parts of West Pokot, Samburu, and Marsabit, which are expected to receive near-average rainfall. The forecast also mentions warmer-than-average temperatures throughout the country during this period.
The report highlights potential impacts of the upcoming rainfall, including improved water and pasture availability, but also warns of possible waterlogging, delayed farm operations, and increased crop diseases. Additionally, there are concerns about waterborne diseases, flash floods, and landslides in certain areas.
Nyeri County’s Governor, Dr. Mutahi Kahiga, has allocated Sh76 million for preparations against the expected rains. This includes Sh37 million for health services to monitor diseases and purchase medical supplies, and Sh10 million for repairing infrastructure. The county plans to utilize an additional Sh20 million from its emergency fund for any arising disasters.
The government has alerted the public about the likelihood of heavy rains from October to January. Government Spokesperson Charles Owino urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, especially those in flood-prone areas. The government is coordinating with county governors and other agencies to implement mitigation strategies against the anticipated heavy downpours.
