Government Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Emerging Skating Talent

Nairobi: The Government has re-affirmed its commitment to supporting athletes in emerging sports, with Principal Secretary (PS) for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, urging sportsmen and women to formally register with their respective federations and the Sports Registrar’s office to strengthen their professional recognition and protection. Speaking during a meeting with celebrated skating sensation, Kelvin Kiarie, at Talanta Plaza, the PS emphasized the importance of formal registration in helping athletes gain credibility and shielding them from challenges arising from disputes or non-compliance within sports federations.

According to Kenya News Agency, proper registration would ensure athletes are recognized independently within their disciplines, enabling them to access opportunities and support structures more effectively. The Government, through the National Awarding Scheme, has also recognized Kiarie for his outstanding international performances that have elevated Kenya’s profile in skating.

Kiarie recently emerged as one of the country’s top skating talents after clinching Gold and Silver medals during an international competition in Benin. He later added two more Gold medals at the Africa Skate Games held in Egypt. His impressive performances secured him qualification for the upcoming World Skate Games set for October in Paraguay.

Ahead of the global event, Kiarie is expected to attend a two-week training camp in China before proceeding to Paraguay, with the Government pledging to facilitate his participation. The PS further called on athletes and teams representing Kenya in regional and international championships to submit comprehensive calendars of events to the Ministry to enable proper planning, facilitation, and budgetary support.

Mwangi reiterated the Government’s commitment, under the leadership of President William Ruto, to safeguarding athletes’ welfare and positioning Kenya as a global sporting powerhouse.
