Nairobi: Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers National (KUPPET) Chairman, Omboko Milemba, has called on the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to enter into a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the union before the start of national examinations.
According to Kenya News Agency, Milemba spoke at his home in Esirulo, Emuhaya, during a gathering with KUPPET delegates from various regions including Vihiga, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, and Nairobi. He emphasized the need for clear payment and supervision timelines for teachers involved in exam invigilation and marking. Milemba urged teachers to refrain from filling KNEC forms until there is a meaningful engagement with the union, insisting that KNEC should address these issues upfront.
Milemba highlighted the frustration teachers have faced over delayed payments for exam-related duties. He demanded an MOU that clearly outlines payment rates, methods, and timelines before the exams commence. Furthermore, he acknowledged the Western region delegates for their successful election and support in defending his position as KUPPET National Chair, praising their unity and collective decision-making.
He encouraged teachers to maintain their unity ahead of the upcoming Regional Council elections, advocating for consultation and consensus to ensure the union’s strength. Additionally, Milemba reiterated KUPPET’s commitment to pushing for the confirmation of 24,000 intern teachers and the hiring of 20,000 additional tutors.
Milemba also addressed the inefficacy of the Digital Health Authority system, which has posed challenges for teachers seeking medical services, and issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Health to respond. He concluded by urging continued unity and focus within KUPPET to uphold the welfare and dignity of teachers.
