Vihiga: The bodaboda industry in Vihiga has emerged as a role model for other counties in Kenya, drawing attention for its successful collaboration with the county government. The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives, Joseph Lunani, recently hosted bodaboda operators from Trans-Nzoia and Busia counties for a benchmarking exercise in Vihiga.

According to Kenya News Agency, the purpose of the visit was to showcase the achievements of the bodaboda industry in Vihiga and highlight the benefits of planning and cooperation between operators and the county government. Joseph Lunani emphasized the need for visiting operators to develop a strategic plan, join cooperatives, embrace partnerships, and commit to paying taxes to ensure sustainable development.

Lunani highlighted the economic contributions of the bodaboda industry in Vihiga, noting its role in helping operators save and advance economically. He stated, “Here in Vihiga, our boda boda operators are organized in economic groups that help them save and grow.” This model of organization and collaboration, he explained, has been instrumental in the success of Vihiga’s bodaboda industry and serves as a blueprint for other counties.

The operators from Trans-Nzoia and Busia counties expressed their admiration for the initiatives undertaken by their Vihiga counterparts and committed to implementing similar strategies in their regions. The success of Vihiga’s bodaboda industry provides a valuable lesson for other counties aiming to improve the livelihoods of operators and support sustainable transportation solutions.
