Homa Bay:Health care delivery in Homa Bay County is set for a major transformation following the proposed establishment of a Surgical Complex. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya led the groundbreaking ceremony for the project at the Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital, highlighting its potential to redefine emergency and referral care in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the ceremony gathered the county’s top leadership, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Senator Moses Kajwang’, demonstrating a unified commitment to a transformative health agenda. The surgical complex, described by CS Tuya as a critical national investment, will be constructed by the military at a cost of over Sh500 million.
The project aims to enhance healthcare and create jobs for the local population. Tuya emphasized the government’s focus on timely service delivery, stating that the construction is expected to be completed swiftly. Additionally, the project is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Defence to bolster public health infrastructure through civilian-military cooperation, with similar projects planned in fifteen counties nationwide.
Governor Wanga praised the project as a significant development for Homa Bay County, addressing the region’s ongoing challenges with road accidents, water-related emergencies, and maternal health complications. The new facility is anticipated to provide crucial additional bed capacity and elevate the status of the Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital to a regional referral center.
Senator Kajwang’ commended the local administration for securing the project and expressed gratitude towards President William Ruto’s government for its developmental focus on Homa Bay. Highlighting the county’s positive reception, Kajwang’ contrasted it with other regions where similar projects have not been as warmly welcomed.
The proposed surgical building will feature modern operating theatres, Intensive Care Units, High Dependency Units, and a fully equipped emergency wing, positioning Homa Bay as a hub for specialized surgical care. The ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, including Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma and Kabondo Kasipul MP Dr. Eve Obara.
