Chepkemel:Uasin Gishu Farouk Kibet, patron of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run, has urged young athletes to steer clear of performance-enhancing drugs and alcohol abuse, warning that such behaviors could have detrimental effects on their sporting careers and future opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kibet highlighted concerns about the distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol to young individuals and warned that severe actions would be taken against those involved in these illegal activities. He questioned the infiltration of drugs from Mombasa into remote areas like Chepsaita, urging security agencies to enhance their efforts against drug trafficking and alcoholism.
During the launch of the fourth edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run at Chepkemel in Turbo Sub-County, Kibet called on the Pharmacy and Poisons Board to increase surveillance of pharmaceutical outlets and act against those selling unauthorized drugs to youth and athletes. He emphasized the importance of discipline and responsible lifestyles for young athletes and stressed that education is crucial for community development.
Kibet also encouraged athletes to embrace the opportunities provided by the competition to showcase their talents, noting the scarcity of talent identification platforms. He expressed pride in the event’s growth, attributing its success to the support from Athletics Kenya and highlighting its role in talent development and education.
Athletics Kenya Youth Development Committee Chairman Barnaba Korir noted that the competition has become a significant platform for nurturing talent and supporting education. He stated that more than 7,000 students from 48 schools are projected to benefit from scholarships by the end of 2026. Korir emphasized the initiative’s focus on education through its scholarship program, which has increased school enrollment and provided international exposure opportunities for promising athletes.
The fourth edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run is scheduled for December 5, 2026, with an anticipated participation of around 10,000 athletes across various age categories.
