Eldoret:World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has expressed confidence in Kenya’s preparations to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, calling it a historic opportunity for the country and the African continent.
According to Kenya News Agency, Coe emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, World Athletics, Athletics Kenya, and other stakeholders, noting President William Ruto’s commitment to fully supporting the preparations. After meeting with President Ruto, the Cabinet Secretary, and Athletics Kenya officials in Eldoret, Coe highlighted the focus on building a strong foundation for organizing the global athletics event.
The championships, set to be the first of their kind in Kenya and Africa, present significant opportunities for athletes and communities across the country. Coe noted that successful delivery would depend on the dedication and cooperation of all involved parties. He commented positively on the commitment shown by Kenya’s leadership and the potential for the event to promote athletics and strengthen the continent’s role in global sports.
Addressing concerns about Nairobi’s selection as host city, Coe defended the decision, explaining that it emerged from a highly competitive bidding process involving cities like Munich, London, and Rome. He underscored that Nairobi’s bid was evaluated against clear criteria by the World Athletics Council, leading to its selection.
Coe also pointed to progress under his presidency in expanding international athletics competitions in Africa, including events like the World Athletics Under-20 and Under-18 Championships in Nairobi. He mentioned ongoing discussions about establishing an African athletics circuit, which would create more competition opportunities on the continent.
Highlighting Kenya’s high-altitude training environments, Coe encouraged international athletes to consider training in Kenya ahead of the championships. He drew from his own experience as a competitor, affirming the benefits of acclimatizing to the host environment before major competitions.
Kenya’s hosting of the 2029 World Athletics Championships is anticipated to enhance the country’s international sporting profile and expand Africa’s role in staging major global sporting events. Coe’s visit and consultations with Kenyan leadership are part of ongoing engagements to ensure successful preparations for the historic championships.
