Mashujaa Day Preparations Progress at Kipchoge Keino Stadium

Eldoret:Kipchoge Keino Stadium is 75 percent complete, and the government is optimistic that the venue will be ready for the Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20. Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya stated that ongoing construction is advancing well, with completion expected to reach 80 percent within a few days, following the installation of seats.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mvurya emphasized that remaining construction will continue post-celebrations, aiming for full completion by the end of December. The government is focused on ensuring the stadium is prepared for the national event before finalizing the tartan track and playing surface.

Mvurya highlighted that this year’s Mashujaa Day theme targets sports, security, and finance, with events planned across Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. Activities will include sports competitions, exhibitions, and a marathon on Saturday as part of the celebration buildup.

He also noted the government’s efforts to enhance sports infrastructure, with Kipchoge Keino Stadium among 33 facilities being developed nationwide. These investments aim to provide modern training and competition venues for athletes and bolster Kenya’s economic gains from the sports sector.

Mvurya stated that these facilities will aid preparations for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, with Eldoret’s high-altitude location being a key training site. He stressed the significant role of sports in economic growth and national development.

The government plans to use Mashujaa Day to raise awareness among athletes and the public about opportunities in sports and the importance of combating doping. Mvurya assured that construction quality standards are being upheld, with oversight from Ministry of Defence engineers.

For the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Kipchoge Keino Stadium is set as an alternative venue, with main events at Raila Odinga International Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Training grounds around Nairobi are also being prepared for the tournament.

Mvurya was joined by Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi and Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo during the stadium inspection.
