Nairobi: Small scale vegetable traders have been left struggling to maintain their business following increased operating costs and reduced consumer spending. Mary Wanjiku, who has been selling Sukuma wiki, spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, potatoes, and traditional vegetables such as managu and Kunde for about five years, said customers have been buying smaller quantities as household budgets have been squeezed by rising cost of living.
According to Kenya News Agency, vegetables like Sukuma wiki, spinach, cabbage, managu, and ‘kunde’ that were sold at Sh10 a bunch now cost Sh30. Potatoes have also increased by 100 per cent. Wanjiku explained that when prices increase, customers complain and some reduce their budgets, while others choose cheaper vegetables instead. She has been forced to adjust her stock and prices after the cost of vegetables and transportation was increased.
Wanjiku shared that she started this business because she needed a source of income to support her family. However, she now faces difficulties as the prices charged by suppliers have risen. The vendor has also been affected by unsold vegetables that eventually spoil, incurring heavy losses when fresh produce fails to attract buyers before going bad.
Despite these challenges, Wanjiku remains committed to operating her business, as it is her main source of income. She expressed that her family depends on this business, making it impossible for her to give up. Additionally, she has regular customers who support her, and she hopes the business will continue to improve.
Similar challenges have been reported by vegetable traders in different parts of Kenya, with rising transport costs and food prices linked to reduced purchasing power and increased pressure on small businesses. Wanjiku called on the government to implement measures aimed at supporting small-scale traders and lowering transportation costs. She also urged customers to continue supporting small businesses, emphasizing that many families depend on them.
