Nyeri: 1,876 students from 27 Vocational Training Centers in Nyeri have graduated with certificates and diplomas in various fields. The graduates have been undergoing training in technical skills such as carpentry, masonry, electrical installation, tailoring, and ICT.
According to Kenya News Agency, addressing the graduands at the Kamukunji Grounds, Deputy Governor Warui Kinanire highlighted the success of the training as a result of a partnership between the County Government of Nyeri and the KCB Foundation. He noted that while some trainees were fully sponsored by their families, a significant number had their tuition partly covered through the partnership, amounting to Sh 23 million. The County Government and KCB Foundation each provided Sh 11.5 million, facilitating the achievement of all 1,876 graduands.
Kinanire encouraged the graduands to pursue further training to better equip themselves for the competitive job market. He emphasized the importance of technical training centers, which have become crucial investments for developing countries amidst dwindling opportunities in the formal job market. He urged the graduands to leverage their skills for self-employment and to create job opportunities for others in the community.
Margaret Macharia, the Education, Training, and Devolution CEC, expressed confidence in the graduating cohorts’ competence to apply their skills practically. She stated that all 1,876 graduands had undergone rigorous hands-on training under 79 qualified tutors and passed their national exams. Macharia commended the cohorts for their dedication and thanked the KCB Foundation for its support, which was instrumental in enabling many learners to complete their courses.
As a reward for their excellence, 146 graduands who achieved a first-class score in their respective trades were each awarded a tool kit to help them initiate their ventures.
