Kwale: The Kwale County Government has disbursed Sh19 million to 43 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) across the county to support technical training and skills development among youth. Governor Fatuma Achani and Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo presented the bursary cheque during the graduation ceremony of 250 trainees from nine VTCs in Msambweni Sub-County, held at Babla Grounds in Ukunda Ward.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Achani emphasized that her Administration has prioritized technical and vocational education as a key driver of youth empowerment and economic growth. The county government has allocated Sh156 million to the VTC sector in the current financial year to improve training facilities, employ instructors, and enhance access to quality technical education.
The Governor further revealed that the Office of the Controller of the Budget had approved a Sh36 million grant to support operations in the vocational training centres. ‘We will continue supporting the centres through the provision of equipment, tools, and infrastructure development to ensure uninterrupted learning,’ she said.
Achani mentioned that the County has employed 134 instructors in various disciplines, including carpentry and joinery, computer operations, dressmaking, hospitality, plumbing and pipe fitting, and secretarial studies. Deputy Governor Kombo encouraged the graduates to use the skills acquired during training to improve their livelihoods and contribute to community development. ‘The skills you have gained are valuable assets. Use them to build successful careers, establish businesses, and create employment opportunities for others,’ he said.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Mishi Kaole, challenged the graduates to embrace self-reliance by applying their practical skills in income-generating activities.
