Kisumu: Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital in Kisumu County has taken a major step towards improving healthcare service delivery by installing a 90kW solar power system.
According to Kenya News Agency, the renewable energy project was implemented by Kisumu County Department of Medical Services, Public Health and Sanitation in partnership with EDP Global as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve service delivery. Kisumu County Executive Committee Member for Health Dr Gregory Ganda stated that the solar installation will ensure continuous power supply during grid electricity outages, allowing for uninterrupted provision of critical medical services.
Dr Ganda highlighted that the project enhances the hospital’s resilience by providing reliable power for operating theatres, maternity services, laboratories, pharmacies, cold-chain equipment, and emergency units while significantly reducing electricity costs. He emphasized that the facility is now fully solarized and generates up to 90kW to power its life-saving theatres and labs around the clock, independent of grid vulnerabilities.
The Health Executive reiterated the county government’s commitment to investing in modern healthcare technologies that improve service delivery, enhance patient safety, and increase operational efficiency. He stressed the importance of guiding major facilities in strategically investing in projects that strengthen service delivery, including renewable energy.
Dr Ganda noted that the county’s approach promotes ownership, sustainability, and prudent financial management by empowering health facilities to invest in projects addressing their most pressing operational needs. He commended the Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital management for embracing this vision through careful planning and wise utilization of its resources.
He expressed appreciation for the leadership demonstrated by the management, staff, and Hospital Management Committee of Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital in translating county policy into meaningful action. Dr Ganda emphasized that this leadership model, where the County provides strategic direction and governance while facilities drive innovation and investment, is what they aim to cultivate.
Dr Ganda reaffirmed the county administration’s commitment to transforming Kisumu’s health system into one that is resilient, sustainable, and responsive to the healthcare needs of residents. Additionally, the county government has invested in similar renewable energy projects in other health facilities, including a solar power system at Chulaimbo Sub-County Hospital and a solar water heating system at Nyakach County Hospital, to further strengthen healthcare service delivery.
