Homabay: Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma was today attacked by goons during a fracas at the Agoro Sare primary school polling centre in Kasipul constituency, where his bodyguard lost his gun in the melee. The MP was at the polling station as an observer for the ODM party when he was confronted by goons associated with one of the by-election candidates, Philip Arok.
According to Kenya News Agency, after the attack, Kaluma informed the media that he went to the polling centre mistakenly, thinking ODM party candidate Boyd Were was scheduled to vote around 9:30 a.m. Upon approaching Mr. Aroko, Kaluma intended only to greet him, but was instead attacked, resulting in the theft of his bodyguard’s gun.
Kaluma recounted that after the gun was snatched by one of the assailants, ‘Mr. Aroko took the gun and went with it.’ Following the incident, supporters of the ODM candidate regrouped and marched towards the polling station; however, police were able to contain the situation at the gate.
Sub-county police commander Philip Saera confirmed the incident and stated that security personnel managed to restore order at the polling centre, although they continue to monitor the situation. He has urged for calm as the voting process continues.
