Nairobi: On the eve of the eagerly-anticipated final clash between Morocco and Madagascar in August during the CHAN 2024, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Dr. Patrice Motsepe termed the football contest, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, as the most successful edition in the history of the tournament.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Motsepe’s commendation is a strong endorsement of Kenya’s capability to host global events and reflects the country’s growing appeal as a destination for international sporting disciplines. His remarks were echoed months later by the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) president Dr. Allah Kouame, who praised Kenya’s hosting capabilities, modern infrastructure, and logistical arrangements during the launch of the CAC Road Cycling African Championships 2025 in Diani, Kwale County.

Kenya’s reputation as a host for global sporting tournaments has grown rapidly. In the past two years, the country successfully hosted over a dozen international events, enhancing its profile in the sporting world. The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, credits this success to strategic government investment in the sporting ecosystem. Mvurya emphasizes Kenya’s ability to meticulously plan and execute events to international standards, making it a preferred hub for global sports bodies.

Notable events hosted by Kenya include the Safari 7s rugby tournament, the Confederation of African Cycling Road Cycling Africa Championships, the Magical Kenya Open golfing tournament, the World Rally Championship, and the Kip Keino Classic Gold Meet tour, among others. In December, Kenya is set to host the World Taekwondo Under-21 Championships and the Tong-IL Moo-Doo international martial arts championships, followed by the opening leg of HSBC SVNS 2 in February.

In 2027, Kenya will host the Africa Cup of Nations at the Talanta Stadium in Nairobi, and it has also placed a bid for the World Athletics Championships in 2029. These events not only showcase Kenya’s infrastructure and organizational prowess but also boost tourism and the local economy.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, highlights the socio-economic benefits of hosting global sports tournaments, noting the positive impact on sectors such as tourism, hospitality, transport, and entertainment. The government’s support for county-level events, such as the Safari 7s in Machakos and the World Safari Rally in Naivasha, demonstrates a commitment to regional equality and talent development through sports.

Kenya’s growing dominance as a sports tourism destination is reflected in the impressive viewership and audience data, with events like the Iten’s road cycling event and CHAN 2024 drawing millions of viewers and attendees. These developments position Kenya as a leader in sports hosting, contributing significantly to the nation’s socio-economic growth.
