Kisii:The State Department for Mining has initiated an environmental restoration project by planting 6000 trees at Nyanchogochi Comprehensive School in Kitutu Central Sub County, Kisii County. This effort is part of the department’s mine-site restoration activities and is in preparation for the upcoming Mazingira Day celebrations.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative is a significant environmental campaign aimed at rehabilitating landscapes degraded by mining activities. Daniel Obwoge, the Department’s Under Secretary, highlighted that this project supports the President’s goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, emphasizing the department’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Kitutu Central Sub County Forest Officer Stephane Adero stated that the collaboration with the Mining Department led to the planting of 6000 tree seedlings at the school. Adero explained that the chosen species, Markhamia lutea and eucalyptus, are suited for the typically waterlogged area.
Kisii County Mining Officer Eng. Ayub Kamande addressed the environmental impacts of mining, such as deforestation and pollution. He stressed the importance of tree planting activities to demonstrate to the community how to rehabilitate mining sites effectively.
Bogusero South location Chief Simon Okeyo encouraged residents to protect the newly planted trees, urging continued collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service and stakeholders to enhance tree growth in the region. The State Department for Mining aims to plant 20 million trees by 2032, contributing to the national target of 15 billion trees.
