Migori Residents Demand Action on Deteriorating Roads Amid Heavy Rains

Migori: Residents of Kababu in Suna West Sub County of Migori County are up in arms over the state of Kababu-Adera road, protesting that it was time the government allocated resources to rehabilitate the road as pledged during campaigns.

According to Kenya News Agency, the residents expressed fears that motorists were avoiding the route because it had become impassible especially during rainy seasons, subjecting commuters and traders to untold suffering as they were unable to transport goods to desired market places.

Dr. Pamela Odhiambo, the former Migori County Women Representative, faulted both the County and National governments for turning a blind eye even after the budget was appropriated for rehabilitation of the road to bitumen standards. ‘We are aware that this same road had been gazetted for improvement to bitumen standards, yet since then, nothing has been done,’ said Pamela Odhiambo.

She added that the delay has since exposed the motorists and passengers using the road to serious delay, making it difficult to transport goods some perishable leading to serious loss to the traders. She added that the poor state of the road, has led to poor delivery of services to residents as public officers deployed at the sub county headquarters could not report to work in time.

‘We are demanding a quick action on all the bad roads in this area, otherwise if it continues raining like this, for the next few days, Suna West will be completely cut off from the rest of the County,’ said Dr. Odhiambo. ‘We are aware that the treasury had already approved six hundred million shillings which was approved by the treasury, but we have seen this road and a few others here being poorly worked on twice since the President spoke,’ said the former legislator.

We are now asking for accountability, responses and quick action from leaders, so as to ensure that the state of roads in the area is improved for the sake of the local population and traders from outside the area, she added.
