Nairobi:Kenya and Yemen have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their bilateral relations, emphasizing trade, investment, maritime and regional security, and multilateral cooperation as key areas for further engagement.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ambassador Lindsay Kiptiness, Deputy Director-General of the Middle East Directorate at the State Department for Foreign Affairs, met with Abdulsalam Alawi Ahmed Al-Awadhi, Head of Mission of the Yemeni Embassy in Kenya, in Nairobi. They discussed the longstanding historical, cultural, and commercial ties between the two nations, as well as opportunities to expand cooperation.
The officials exchanged views on regional peace and security, focusing on developments in Yemen and their implications for the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and the wider Red Sea region. Kiptiness emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Yemen for Kenya’s security and economic interests, highlighting Yemen as a significant market for Kenyan agricultural products.
Al-Awadhi addressed the evolving humanitarian and security situation in Yemen, citing renewed fighting between the Houthi movement and Yemeni government forces. He urged continued support from Kenya and the international community for diplomatic efforts towards lasting peace.
Both officials stressed the interconnectedness of security in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, noting that further escalation in Yemen could affect the Red Sea region and international peace and security. They emphasized the need for strengthened multilateral efforts to support a peaceful resolution to the conflict and promote regional stability.
The meeting also explored opportunities to expand trade and investment, strengthen people-to-people ties, and deepen cooperation through multilateral fora, reinforcing the shared commitment to advancing Kenya-Yemen relations while supporting peace, stability, and development in Yemen and the wider region.
