Rangenyo:Rangenyo Parish Priest Fr. Bernard Nyangeri has led a peaceful public demonstration in Rangenyo village, Nyamira County to protest against the brewing, selling, and consumption of illicit brews in the area.
According to Kenya News Agency, Fr. Nyangeri highlighted that the widespread issue of illicit brews has resulted in unnecessary deaths, underdevelopment, increased crime rates, and moral decline in society. He mobilized church members and the public for a procession to address the rampant drunkenness claiming the lives of young people and impoverishing families.
Fr. Nyangeri expressed concern that many students with potential have dropped out of school due to the influence of these brews and lack of educational resources. He noted that the majority of deaths he oversees at requiem masses are alcohol-related, leaving behind orphans facing uncertain futures.
Over the past six months, Fr. Nyangeri has buried more than eight individuals whose deaths were related to alcohol, prompting him to rally community support to combat this illegal trade and foster a sober, visionary generation. He voiced worry over the lack of parental guidance leading to youth involvement in crime and conflicts with authorities.
In his efforts, Fr. Nyangeri visited homes of known illicit brewers to conduct Holy Mass, urging them to pursue legal businesses to avoid further endangering the community. He called on the Rangenyo community to work with the National Government Administrative Officers and stakeholders to eradicate illicit brews for future generations.
