Machakos: Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s 3rd Edition Football Tournament Cup is gaining traction as local teams from five wards advanced to sub-county competition after intense action and commitment from the players.
According to Kenya News Agency, the teams from Machakos Central, Kalama, Masii, Muvuti-Kiima Kimwe, and Kola-Muumandu have successfully proceeded to the sub-county level amid tough competition from the wards. All teams are eyeing the coveted Sh1 million prize from the governor, a prospect that has driven the youths to train with consistency and dedication on the pitch.
Scottlanders FC from Machakos Central Ward defeated Mta FC 7-6 amid cheers and songs, while Jua Kali Queens narrowly bested Machakos Queens 4-3 in a challenging match. In Muvuti-Kiima Kimwe Ward, Katoloni FC overcame Katoloni Heroes 2-0, while the women’s side, Katoloni Starlets, advanced on aggregate after strong performances.
Masii Heroes from Masii Ward secured a 2-0 victory over Kyaitha FC in the men’s final, and Masii Starlets overpowered Vyulya Queens 3-2 in a competitive match. In Kalama Ward, Vatican Lions triumphed over Mulaani FC 3-2, earning a place at the sub-county stage. Mbukoni Ladies emerged top in the women’s category after a round-robin tournament, and in Kola-Muumandu Ward, Kitonyini FC edged Muumandu FC 1-0, with Malaika Starlets mirroring the scoreline against Mutalani.
Machakos County Director of Sports and Youth, Onesmus Ituo, spoke at Machakos Showgrounds before the competitions, commending the increasing number of dedicated players. He urged team managers and captains to instill discipline in players to keep them focused on their goals.
Ituo added that, besides training and scouting, they also provide guidance and counseling for youths to enhance their overall mental well-being and resilience. This helps them avoid drug abuse, encourages teamwork, and improves their performance under pressure.
As the journey to the final tournament draws near, the competitive atmosphere in the county has sparked excitement and camaraderie among youths and sports enthusiasts, fostering emotional, physical, and social growth.
