Government to Decentralize Passport Issuance at Huduma Centers

Nairobi: The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has announced the launch of the distributed renewable energy and clean cooking Project Preparation Facility

Thika: The government is considering decentralizing the issuance of passports at Huduma Centers to facilitate a wider reach of Kenyans in need of the document. Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku stated that if the proposal is approved, immigration officers will be deployed at some Huduma Centers to offer this crucial service.

According to Kenya News Agency, this development arises amidst ongoing complaints from Kenyans regarding delays and frustrations when accessing the document at the limited number of immigration offices across the country. CS Ruku noted that the demand for passports has significantly increased over the years due to many Kenyans seeking employment abroad, necessitating a streamlined issuance process.

“Immigration is one of the services that most Kenyans ask for at Huduma centers. We shall see how we can synchronize this to ensure passport registration can also be processed from Huduma centers,” said Ruku. He made these remarks today after an impromptu tour of the Kiambu Huduma Centre in Thika town to assess service delivery.

The CS also promised to expedite the processing of Certificates of Good Conduct in response to concerns about delays, which have cost several youths opportunities. He mentioned that his office would collaborate with relevant agencies to speed up the issuance of this essential document.

Regarding adherence to the code of conduct for public servants, the CS warned that inefficient and lazy civil servants would face legal consequences. He assured that his ministry would work closely with all government departments to implement practical, timely, and citizen-centered reforms aimed at enhancing service delivery.
