Nairobi: Grief has engulfed Chwele Market in Kabuchai Constituency after four tomato traders were killed in a road accident that happened at Mai Mahiu. The four, identified as Mercyline Wefwafwa, Centrine Juma, Jane Barasa, and Anthony Kilwake, died on the spot after their vehicle collided with a truck. Five others were seriously injured and are admitted to various hospitals.
According to Kenya News Agency, the traders had travelled to Karatina, Nyeri County, to source tomatoes for Chwele Market, one of the largest open-air markets in Western Kenya. Business at the busy market was subdued as traders mourned their colleagues. Chwele Market Chairman Ben Wanyonyi stated that the group was returning home when tragedy struck at the notorious Mai Mahiu stretch.
Wanyonyi explained, “They left Chwele for Karatina on a routine business trip. We appeal to the county government, elected leaders, and the public to stand with the bereaved families and help give them a decent send-off.” He mentioned that the deceased were young parents who have left behind young children in need of support.
Furthermore, Wanyonyi noted that Governor Kenneth Lusaka and area MCA Eric Wekesa had dispatched vehicles to ferry the bodies from Mai Mahiu and assist in identification. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga expressed his devastation upon receiving the news and announced that he had organized transport for the affected families. “I have received this news with devastation. Kabichai/Chwele MCA Eric Wekesa will accompany the families to Mai Mahiu to bring the remains home. My deepest condolences to the families. I wish the injured a quick recovery,” Kalasinga stated.
In a statement, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka conveyed his deep shock and profound sadness upon learning of the incident. “This is a tragic loss to our county’s business community. They were travelling for grocery procurement to fend for their families. As a county government, we stand firmly with them during this difficult time,” he said.
