Kiambu: A high-level delegation from the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme Implementation Unit (PIU) visited Kiambu County to assess progress and strengthen climate resilience initiatives. The team engaged officers from the County Climate Change Unit (CCCU) to review lessons learnt in the implementation of the programme, offer technical support on screening County Climate Resilient Investment Grant (CCRIG) II projects, and provide guidance on environmental and social monitoring of CCRIG I investments.
According to Kenya News Agency, the visit brought together representatives from the World Bank, State Department for Water and Sanitation, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Department of Social Services, and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). The delegation commended the County Government of Kiambu for its strong commitment to implementing sustainable climate solutions aimed at addressing local vulnerabilities and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.
The FLLoCA programme seeks to strengthen climate resilience through interventions in four major sectors: environment, water, agriculture, and disaster risk management. These components are designed to empower counties and communities to adopt adaptive measures that ensure long-term sustainability and resilience to climate shocks.
During the visit, the delegation toured Kabete and Kiambaa Sub-counties, where they worked closely with the CCCU to assess and screen proposed projects such as water supply systems and storm water drainage works for environmental and social risks. These projects are expected to improve access to clean water, reduce flooding, and boost livelihoods for residents in areas prone to water scarcity and drainage challenges.
Speaking during the visit, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, Energy, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Mr. David Kuria, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and technical support provided by the FLLoCA team and partners. ‘Kiambu County is committed to implementing sustainable climate interventions that will safeguard our environment and improve the livelihoods of our people. Through FLLoCA, we are empowering communities to be part of the climate solution,’ said Mr. David Kuria.
Chief Officer for Environment, Mr. Edmuld Njihia, reaffirmed the county’s dedication to capacity building and inclusive participation, noting that long-term resilience depends on strengthening institutions and local ownership. ‘We are working to build institutional and community capacity to deliver transformative and sustainable climate outcomes that directly benefit our people,’ said Mr. Njihia.
The FLLoCA PIU team reaffirmed its continued partnership with the county, pledging to offer technical guidance and oversight to ensure smooth and effective programme implementation.
