Eldoret:Five teams have initiated a comprehensive clean-up operation across Eldoret to prepare for Saturday’s 200,000-tree-growing challenge during the 2026 Mazingira Day celebrations.
According to Kenya News Agency, the clean-up is a key component of a week-long series of environmental activities leading up to the national celebrations at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School in Eldoret. The teams, directed by Deputy County Commissioners, have been deployed along five specific routes from the Uasin Gishu County headquarters.
Route One extends from the county headquarters to Hawaii, Route Two to Huruma, and Route Three to Jamboni. Route Four, led by the Kapseret Deputy County Commissioner, covers the path to King’s Square, while Route Five focuses on the Central Business District.
During the launch at the county headquarters, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale, alongside County Executive Committee Member for Education Anthony Sitienei, emphasized the initiative’s goal of maintaining a clean and appealing Eldoret, especially as the city gears up for Mashujaa Day celebrations. Dr. Nyale highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in environmental maintenance, crucial for public health, ecosystem protection, and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Dr. Nyale expressed appreciation for the planning committee and stakeholders for their effective coordination and resource mobilization efforts. He encouraged ongoing community participation in environmental stewardship beyond the festivities, noting Eldoret’s upcoming role as host for national events.
National Environment Management Authority Uasin Gishu County Director Solomon Kihiu praised stakeholders for their engagement in environmental conservation activities throughout the week. These activities began with tree planting and were followed by quarry site restoration, highway greening, and beautification, culminating in the clean-up exercise.
The clean-up efforts pave the way for the 200,000-tree-growing challenge, which aims to support the government’s environmental conservation objectives and foster community involvement in natural resource protection. The 2026 Mazingira Day celebrations in Eldoret will focus on promoting sustainable environmental practices and enhancing public engagement in conservation initiatives.
