Mombasa Prepares for Severe El Niño-Induced Rains

Mombasa:The Mombasa County Government is taking proactive measures to prevent flooding as the city anticipates severe El Niño-induced rains. Efforts are underway to enhance the drainage system, with maintenance teams working to unclog major storm drains, clear waste, and complete box culverts in collaboration with national agencies.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has forecast above-average rainfall for over 80% of the country during the October-December 2026 short rains season due to El Niño conditions. Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has directed the environment, water, and solid waste management departments to clear drainage systems in the sub-counties of Mvita, Nyali, Likoni, Changamwe, Jomvu, and Kisauni.

To improve water flow and reduce flooding, new stormwater drainage systems are under construction. The county government has identified flood hotspots and is fixing infrastructure to protect people before the rains intensify. Multi-agency teams are mapping vulnerable areas, clearing drainage channels, and preparing emergency resources.

A report from the National Disaster Operations Centre warns that Mombasa is a high-risk urban hotspot for severe flooding. To mitigate risks, 300 officers have been involved in rescue and emergency-response exercises. The national government has activated an Ad Hoc Cabinet Committee on El Niño preparedness to support the devolved governments.

The Kenya Red Cross Society noted that the 2023 El Niño displaced 500,000 people across 43 counties. Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor emphasized coordinated action among the national government, county government, and humanitarian agencies to rapidly mobilize emergency resources. The Kenya Maritime Authority has also warned of rough sea conditions, advising caution for fisherfolk and boat operators.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service is bolstering its operational readiness in response to potential flooding and other weather-related emergencies as El Niño conditions develop.
