Technical University Advocates for Increased Mental Health Investment

Mombasa:The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has marked World Mental Health Day by emphasizing the need for open discussions about mental health, particularly among young people, and calling for enhanced investment in mental health services.

According to Kenya News Agency, TUM’s Head of Mental Health and Guidance and Counselling, Dr. Soud Tengah, spoke at the event held at Mama Ngina Waterfront. He explained that the university organized the commemoration a day before the October 10 global observance to increase awareness among students and the broader community.

Dr. Tengah highlighted the persistent issue of stigma as a barrier to accessing mental health care, noting that many suffer in silence. He referenced this year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard Real Voices, Real Change,” which focuses on those unable to access services. Citing World Health Organization data, Dr. Tengah pointed out that 75 to 90 percent of people with mental health conditions lack access to care, with most who do receive it through private facilities.

He stressed the university’s role in providing a platform for young people to discuss pressures such as relationships, academic challenges, and family expectations. Dr. Tengah advocated for an environment where young people can express themselves freely without judgment.

Among the mental health issues identified were substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges. Dr. Tengah also addressed the tragic occurrence of suicides among young people in workplaces and urged community support for those in need.

Calling on the government to prioritize mental health, Dr. Tengah criticized the allocation of less than one percent of the national budget for the sector and urged increased funding for research to develop local solutions tailored to Kenyan communities. He emphasized the importance of building on local interventions rather than relying solely on external ones.

Dr. Tengah encouraged individuals facing mental health challenges to seek support from trusted friends or professionals, reinforcing the message that they are not alone and should seek help promptly.
