Kieni:During the launch of the Second Phase of Kenya’s Digital Literacy Programme at Nyaribo Junior School, ASAL PS Dr. Carol Karugu highlighted the importance of integrating digital skills into education. She emphasized that teaching through digitally enabled devices is essential for ensuring all learners have access to quality education.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Karugu noted that with properly trained teachers and access to reliable internet, students can interact with peers both locally and internationally. This launch follows a nationwide initiative led by President Dr. William Ruto at Kiminini Junior School in Trans Nzoia.
Eight other schools in Nyeri County participated in similar launches. Dr. Karugu stressed that the program aims to eliminate educational inequalities in Kenya and provide global learning opportunities. She mentioned that the initiative is not politically motivated, as its primary beneficiaries, the children, do not vote.
The program represents a milestone in adopting global best practices in education. With rapid advancements in technology, both teachers and students need to adapt to new methods of learning. Dr. Karugu pointed out the potential for international teaching collaborations, allowing resources to be shared and opportunities equalized.
ICTA Board Director Savio Wambugu announced that 178 smart boards have been distributed to junior schools in Nyeri County, with 534 teachers trained in digital literacy. The government has rolled out 10,300 smart boards nationwide under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project.
This phase of the program focuses on equipping 10,382 public junior schools with smart boards and laptops, moving beyond the initial phase’s distribution of green tablets for primary students. The government is prioritizing reliable internet connectivity for all junior secondary schools.
The curriculum for Grades 7, 8, and 9 is being digitized, with Grade 7 already included and Grade 8 and 9 in the process of adoption. Teachers are also receiving training to effectively use digital tools for content creation and instruction.
