Airtel Kenya Launches Business Wallet to Empower SMEs

Nairobi: Mobile network operator, Airtel Kenya, and its mobile money subsidiary, Airtel Money, have introduced a new financial product named Business Wallet (or Biashara Wallet). This launch, accompanied by an upgraded cashback initiative, aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and enhance digital financial inclusion throughout the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Business Wallet allows entrepreneurs and micro-businesses to separate their personal funds from business transactions directly on their mobile phones without needing additional documentation or hardware. During the inauguration and media engagement ceremony held in Nairobi, Airtel Kenya Managing Director Djibril Tobe emphasized the company’s long-term investment strategy in enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure. Tobe stated, “At Airtel, our mission is always to go beyond connecting things. We actually want to build a digital infrastructure that improves customer experience, empowers businesses, and support national development.”

Tobe highlighted Kenya’s position as a valued digital economy in the region and confirmed Airtel’s commitment to expanding network coverage, launching hyperscale data centers, and introducing satellite-driven direct-to-cell innovations. Addressing the needs of local merchants, Airtel Money Acting Managing Director Michael Bonke explained the operational mechanics and safety features of the Business Wallet. Bonke noted, “Our greatest opportunity lies in the small and medium enterprises in Kenya. Today, our entrepreneurs need more than just a platform to send and receive money; they need a financial solution that will help them manage their day-to-day business activities.”

Under the new business model, Airtel Money customers can transfer funds into any registered Business Wallet without charge, up to the Central Bank of Kenya’s daily transaction limit of Sh250,000. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicates that SMEs account for over 90 percent of all business enterprises in Kenya and significantly contribute to the gross domestic product (GDP).

Airtel Money serves over 6 million customers, with a network of more than 270,000 agents and 2 million merchant outlets nationwide. These developments have increased its market share to approximately 11 percent following recent system upgrades. Alongside the business solution, Airtel has enhanced its Rudishiwa reward program. The previous 50 percent airtime rebate on eligible transaction fees has been updated to a 50 percent direct cashback into the user’s mobile wallet, with no need for manual opt-in.

Tobe concluded by reiterating the company’s strategy to bolster Kenya’s role as East Africa’s digital hub through ongoing platform innovations and customer-focused financial tools.
