Kisumu:The 2026 African Road Cycling Championships in Kisumu witnessed the emergence of two promising young cyclists who captivated the audience with their talent and determination. Among the youngest competitors in the event, 19-year-old Kenyan cyclist Sherry Chepkemboi and 15-year-old Hope Mathiba from Botswana both left a significant impression on the championship’s history.
According to Kenya News Agency, Chepkemboi, despite not finishing the under-23 race due to a bike malfunction, has shown remarkable progress since she began cycling in 2022. Her journey from using a bicycle for errands to joining the Black Mamba cycling team underscores her commitment to the sport. The Black Mamba Development Squad, where she trains, is dedicated to nurturing East African cycling talent and is based in Iten, Kenya.
Mathiba, who started cycling at the age of 13, participated in the women’s 38.2-kilometer Youth Road race and finished in seventh place, making her the youngest athlete in that category to achieve such a ranking. Despite the mental challenges and pressure faced during competitions, Mathiba has demonstrated resilience and continues to develop her skills by training in South Africa and using indoor cycling when necessary.
Both cyclists have highlighted the importance of support from family, coaches, and sponsors in their journey. Chepkemboi and Mathiba also encourage young girls interested in cycling to pursue the sport by joining teams and remaining focused on their goals, despite the pressures and challenges they may face.
