Mombasa: A woman died and two others were seriously injured following a road accident involving a matatu and a canter lorry along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway last night.
According to Kenya News Agency, the 7.40 pm accident occurred at Kautandini area in Mukaa Subcounty when the driver of the matatu attempted to overtake a fleet of vehicles and collided with an oncoming canter lorry. Mukaa Subcounty Police Commander Abduba Hussein confirmed the accident and stated that the injured are receiving treatment at Sultan Hamud Subcounty Hospital.
Hellen Kanini, aged 38, suffered serious head injuries and died while being rushed to the hospital. The injured individuals include Police Constable Joseph Wachira from Illasit Police Station, who sustained intense chest pains, and Purity, aged 28, who suffered a head injury. Other passengers involved in the accident sustained minor injuries.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the Sultan Hamud Subcounty Hospital mortuary for preservation, awaiting an autopsy. The damaged vehicles were towed to Salama Police Station for further investigation. The matatu, a Toyota Hiace with registration number KDA 126H, was driven by Simon Ngumi Wambui, aged 37, while the canter, an Isuzu FRR with registration number KDL 034G, was driven by Edward Nduati Ndiboi.
