Nairobi: West Pokot County has set in motion preparations to host two of Kenya’s biggest inter-county sporting events after delegates from across the country expressed satisfaction with the county’s state of preparedness following a four-day inspection tour of sports facilities and accommodation venues.
According to Kenya News Agency, the delegation, comprising officials from the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) and the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA), concluded an extensive assessment of venues that will host the 13th edition of the KICOSCA Games in November this year and the KYISA National Championships in April next year.
The inspection culminated in a courtesy call on West Pokot Governor, Simon Kachapin, at his Kapenguria residence, where the governor welcomed delegates from the participating counties and invited them to become ambassadors of the county by sharing its positive story with the rest of the country. Governor Kachapin said hosting the two national competitions marks a historic milestone for West Pokot and presents a rare opportunity to showcase the county’s immense tourism potential, vibrant cultural heritage, and remarkable development to thousands of visitors expected during the events.
Governor Kachapin highlighted that hosting these events is not just about sports, but an opportunity for Kenyans to discover the true West Pokot. He addressed common misconceptions about the county, stating that issues like cattle rustling and banditry are confined to isolated border areas and do not reflect the overall security situation. He assured that security arrangements have been put in place for the safety of all participants and visitors.
The governor emphasized that preparations are nearly complete, with funding allocated to ensure memorable games. He encouraged visitors to explore local attractions such as the historic Kapenguria Museum and the colonial law courts at Chewoyet National School, as well as the county’s landscapes and cultural heritage.
As the Chairperson of the Council of Governors’ Committee on Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Social Services, Kachapin underscored the role of sports in fostering national cohesion. He praised the national government’s investment in sports infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
National KICOSCA Chairman John Ang’awa, who led the inspection team, expressed satisfaction with the county’s progress in upgrading sporting infrastructure. He noted that the county government had invested significantly in facilities, demonstrating a commitment to hosting successful games. Ang’awa also credited devolution with accelerating development across counties.
KICOSCA Vice Chairperson Fred Onundu stated that the county is about 95 percent ready, with remaining preparations expected to be completed before the competitions begin. He encouraged participating counties to intensify training efforts.
The events are projected to attract more than 15,000 athletes, officials, and supporters, offering significant business opportunities for local enterprises and boosting the county’s economy.
County Executive Committee Member Lucy Litole praised the county government’s commitment, saying the preparations reflect the administration’s determination to position West Pokot as a leading sporting and tourism destination in Kenya. She expressed confidence in the county’s athletes and promised a memorable experience for all visitors.
The KICOSCA Games and KYISA Championships provide important platforms for athletes to qualify for regional and national opportunities. Hosting these prestigious events is seen as a defining moment for West Pokot, marking its emergence on Kenya’s sporting and tourism map.
