Vihiga County Endorses Solar Walkathon to Promote Clean Energy

Vihiga: The County Government of Vihiga has endorsed the ‘Walk for Light – Solar Walkathon 2026’, an initiative designed to promote the use of solar lanterns and reduce dependence on paraffin lighting due to associated health and environmental risks. Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo announced this support at the County Headquarters, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Governor met with officials from Westlight Solar CBO, including Mr. Francis Olocho Sande and Mr. Kennedy Miheso, who are leading the walkathon efforts. The Governor encouraged residents to participate in the 10-kilometre walk set for May 23, 2026, from Mahanga to Musunguti in Emuhaya Constituency.

The Governor highlighted the progress made by the organization in aiding schools and communities through donations of solar lanterns, which have improved access to clean and safe lighting. He called on the residents to show up in large numbers, stressing the significance of collective efforts in realizing a healthier and sustainable future.
