Two Arrested in Machakos Over Elephant Tusks Worth Sh1.2 Million

Machakos:A multi-agency security team, led by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers, has arrested two suspects in Machakos Town for possession of elephant tusks valued at Sh1.2 million.

According to Kenya News Agency, the suspects were intercepted while allegedly transporting 12 kilograms of ivory on a motorcycle. The tusks, wrapped in foil paper, were concealed during the transportation.

The operation was a result of a month-long surveillance mission aimed at tracking the trafficking ring, as stated by Machakos Sub-County KWS Warden Ismael Kiprop. Preliminary investigations suggest the ivory was sourced from outside Machakos County, although it remains uncertain where the elephants were poached.

Kiprop highlighted an increase in illegal wildlife trafficking in the area, with 11 cases reported in the past month and five additional suspects arrested in connection with elephant tusks. He urged residents to exercise caution when purchasing meat, warning that increased demand could fuel poaching and the illegal wildlife trade.

The two suspects are set to face charges in court for possession and transportation of wildlife trophies.
