Turkana Launches Intensive Ebola Preparedness Training for Frontline Workers

Turkana: The County Government of Turkana has initiated a comprehensive four-day training program on Ebola preparedness and response, targeting 70 frontline workers across the county. This move forms part of Turkana’s ongoing efforts to bolster its capacity to tackle potential Ebola outbreaks.

According to Kenya News Agency, the training aims to equip healthcare workers with vital skills in early detection, screening, triage, isolation, case notification, and infection prevention and control measures. These competencies are crucial for reducing the risk of Ebola transmission within healthcare facilities and communities.

Participants are also undergoing hands-on training in the correct usage of personal protective equipment (PPE), effective hand hygiene practices, environmental cleaning, waste management, and safe patient handling procedures. The initiative gathers healthcare professionals from referral hospitals, sub-county hospitals, and health facilities located at key entry points throughout Turkana County.

Through simulations and practical exercises, the training enhances the participants’ ability to swiftly identify, report, and respond to suspected Ebola cases, ensuring the safety of patients, colleagues, and the broader community. Daniel Esimit, Director of Preventive and Promotive Health, emphasized that preparedness starts with a well-trained health workforce. ‘By strengthening the skills of our frontline healthcare workers in infection prevention and control, early detection, and emergency response, we are enhancing our capacity to protect communities and contain any potential threat before it escalates,’ he stated.

The training is set against the backdrop of ongoing Ebola outbreaks in neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The continuous cross-border movement between Uganda and Kenya places Turkana and other border counties at increased risk. County health authorities have reiterated their dedication to maintaining vigilance, ongoing surveillance, and implementing proactive measures to protect public health.
