Nairobi:Nandi Central: Tinderet MP Julius Melly has emphasized the need for unity and greater investment in development initiatives to tackle economic challenges faced by the community.
According to Kenya News Agency, Melly highlighted the importance of placing development at the forefront of public discussions, stressing that residents are more concerned with opportunities to enhance their livelihoods than with political rhetoric. This statement was made during a fundraiser for development initiatives at AIC Kombe District Church Council.
Melly underscored education as a crucial investment for the country’s future, calling on parents, churches, and leaders to collaborate to ensure that children from impoverished families are not left behind. He advocated for education and skills development as means to enable young people to effectively compete for employment and business opportunities.
The MP also called for increased support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, noting that financial difficulties threaten the education of many bright children. He urged investment in children, asserting that education is the most secure pathway to a better future for the next generation.
In terms of economic empowerment, Melly encouraged residents to seize opportunities in agriculture, small businesses, and other income-generating activities. He stressed the need for farmers to have improved access to markets, affordable inputs, value addition, and reliable extension services to boost their earnings. He pointed out that agriculture is a major source of livelihood in Nandi and advocated for more investment in value addition to enable farmers to earn more from their products.
Melly appealed for community support for development projects through collective efforts, emphasizing the significant role churches play in complementing government initiatives. He noted the importance of communities coming together to support projects, which can lead to greater achievements.
Furthermore, Melly encouraged the youth to embrace entrepreneurship, noting the limited availability of formal employment opportunities and the potential for skills to help create their own income sources. He urged residents to maintain peace and unity, cautioning against allowing political differences to hinder development. He reiterated that while political competition is natural in a democratic society, it should be guided by respect and issue-focused debate.
Finally, Melly praised the church and residents for mobilizing resources for development, highlighting that such partnerships demonstrate the value of community involvement in enhancing social services. He called on leaders, churches, professionals, and other well-wishers to continue supporting community projects, stating that sustained cooperation would strengthen institutions, improve household incomes, and accelerate development across the county.
