Vihiga:Teachers in Vihiga County are being encouraged to prioritize their mental and physical health at a free medical camp organized ahead of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
According to Kenya News Agency, the medical camp, running from September 27 to October 5 at the Vihiga County Commissioner’s headquarters, aims to help teachers assess their health and learn about maintaining wellness. The event is part of the lead-up to the national World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani, Nairobi on October 5.
Evelyn Chemjor, Vihiga County Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), stated that screenings are being conducted for body temperature, body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugars, and mental health. She emphasized the importance of health for teacher productivity and mentioned the presence of a psychiatrist at the camp.
The medical camp is part of several activities planned, including runs at the regional level in Kakamega and a tree-planting exercise. Teachers will also gather for the TSC Open Day on October 1, 2026, featuring presentations and cultural activities.
Chemjor highlighted that teachers with health concerns identified during the camp would be referred to hospitals for further treatment. The TSC’s wellness division at its headquarters also provides support for mental health issues, with government coverage for eligible teachers through the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Annette Mutesa from Erin Medical and Wellness Centre in Chango explained that her facility is participating in the camp to promote mental wellness and SHA accreditation. She encouraged teachers to engage in regular health check-ups and to seek help for mental health issues without stigma.
The medical camp targets teachers across Vihiga’s sub-counties and is a key part of the county’s preparations for World Teachers’ Day. Curren Ameda, a teacher at Chanzeywe Comprehensive School, noted the importance of such camps for health monitoring and urged teachers to support each other in seeking help when needed.
