Education Secretary Urges Striking University Lecturers to Return Amid Ongoing CBA Talks

Nairobi:Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has called on university lecturers to resume their teaching duties while negotiations on the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are underway. He emphasized that learning should not be disrupted during these discussions.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ogamba highlighted that negotiations between the government and university lecturers’ unions are actively addressing unresolved issues in the proposed CBA. He stressed the importance of adhering to court orders that have suspended the strike, reminding lecturers that the country operates under the rule of law.

Ogamba refrained from providing specific outcomes of the negotiations, noting that talks are ongoing and expressing hope for an agreement soon. He made these remarks at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi during the distribution of Grade 11 textbooks and curriculum support materials.

The government, Ogamba stated, is committed to resolving issues affecting university lecturers, referencing past CBA disputes from 2017-2021 and 2021-2025 that have been settled. He reassured lecturers of the government’s dedication to addressing matters related to the 2025-2029 CBA through continued dialogue with their representatives.

The ongoing lecturers’ strike has impacted learning at public universities, with unions urging the resolution of various issues under the new CBA. Ogamba urged lecturers to allow negotiations to proceed without disrupting university education, reinforcing the government’s commitment to engaging with unions to reach a resolution.
