Khwisero: The Government has allocated Sh350 million to Khwisero Sub-County to connect more than 6,000 households to electricity under the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary (CS) Opiyo Wandayi has said.
According to Kenya News Agency, Wandayi stated that this allocation was part of the Government’s broader investment in electricity connectivity, with approximately Sh2.5 billion designated for electrification projects across Kakamega County during the current financial year. The CS made these remarks in Kisa West Ward, Khwisero Sub-County, where he commenced the deployment of construction materials for Last Mile Connectivity projects aimed at more than 500 households in Eshiabalika and Eshitimba villages.
He emphasized that these projects would enhance the livelihoods of residents by increasing access to electricity for homes, schools, health facilities, and businesses. Wandayi also reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring that more households in rural areas are connected to the national grid, highlighting that electricity access is crucial for stimulating economic activities and improving service delivery.
The CS encouraged residents benefiting from the projects to utilize electricity in establishing and expanding small businesses, underscoring that increased connectivity would generate opportunities for employment and income generation. He was accompanied by Nyando MP Jared Okello, Malava MP Oscar Nabulindo, Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, and other leaders, who expressed that the electricity projects would transform the targeted villages by enabling residents to engage in productive activities requiring reliable power.
These initiatives are being carried out through Kenya Power and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) as part of efforts to broaden electricity access to underserved communities.
