Tharaka nithi: Military veterans in Tharaka Nithi County are set to benefit from a new grassroots initiative, aimed at enhancing their welfare, unity, and recognition through the establishment of the Tharaka Nithi Military Veterans Chapter.
According to Kenya News Agency, speaking during a consultative meeting held in Chuka, Chairman of the chapter and member of the organizing committee, Colonel (Rtd.) Godfrey Gitonga, said the initiative seeks to bring together all military veterans who retired honorably from service to foster cohesion and collective empowerment. Gitonga announced that the chapter is scheduled to be officially launched on May 22 and called upon all retired servicemen and women from across the county to attend the event. He said the association will provide a platform through which veterans can continue being recognized and appreciated for their years of dedicated service to the nation.
Gitonga emphasized that the chapter will also extend support to spouses of deceased veterans to ensure they remain included in welfare programs and other support structures. According to the chairman, the organization will focus on uniting retired military personnel, promoting social welfare, and ensuring no veteran is left behind. He said the chapter will work closely with relevant authorities to assist veterans, who are yet to receive pension benefits and help address challenges affecting their access to retirement entitlements.
Gitonga further encouraged veterans who are not covered under military medical schemes to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme, so as to access affordable and quality healthcare services. He added that the association will identify the various professional skills and expertise possessed by veterans and utilize them in mentorship programmes and county development initiatives. ‘Our motto is ‘Service Beyond Uniform,’ because even after retirement, veterans still have a role to play in society,’ he said.
Gitonga further revealed that the chapter will support veterans battling depression, trauma, and other life challenges often experienced after retirement from active service. Col. (Rtd) Mugambi Mutegi hailed the initiative as a timely move that will strengthen unity among veterans and enable them to continue contributing positively to society. Mutegi said the forum will create an avenue for veterans to share experiences, support one another, and participate in development matters within the county. ‘It will ensure that once military officers retire, they do not disappear from society but continue being recognized and valued for their contribution to the nation,’ he said.
He observed that the military remains a highly organized institution that values its members, adding that the formation of the chapter will make it easier to reach and support veterans instead of having them scattered in different places. Mutegi further noted that the initiative will inspire and mentor young people aspiring to join the disciplined forces. Another veteran, Desderio Mbaka, emphasized the need to strengthen military veterans’ associations at the grassroots level, saying the move will empower retired officers socially and economically.
