Nairobi: A Catholic priest has called for political tolerance and peaceful engagement among leaders and residents following heated political exchanges witnessed during church services in Antubetwe Kiongo Ward, Igembe North Sub County. Father Stephen Musunku urged political leaders to respect each other despite ideological differences, saying disagreements should not undermine unity and social harmony.
According to Kenya News Agency, Father Musunku’s remarks came after leaders attending Sunday church services expressed divergent views on development, governance, and political leadership, prompting reactions from sections of the congregation. Addressing the faithful, Father Musunku reminded leaders and residents to uphold dignity and mutual respect regardless of political affiliations. “We better remain poor but with our dignity intact. We should respect everyone,” Father Musunku said.
He emphasized that places of worship should remain platforms for peace, unity, and constructive dialogue, urging leaders to communicate with civility even when they hold opposing views. The services were attended by several political leaders, including former Meru Governor Peter Munya, Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Erick Mugaa, Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu, former MPs Maore Maoka and Joseph M’Eruaki, as well as local Members of the County Assembly.
During the gatherings, leaders shared different perspectives on development projects, healthcare services, and political leadership in Igembe North, reflecting growing political activity in the county ahead of the 2027 General Election. Father Musunku’s message focused on the need for peaceful coexistence, encouraging leaders and residents to embrace dialogue and ensure political differences do not erode respect among communities.
