Peace and Talent Promotion Sports Initiative Kicks Off in Samburu

Samburu: Samburu Governor, Lati Lelelit, officially launched the Third Edition of the Governor’s Cup football tournament at the Kenyatta Stadium in Maralal. This event aims to promote peace through sports in the region. The Governor highlighted that the tournament is designed to foster peace in Samburu County while nurturing discipline and talent among the youth. Sports, he emphasized, offer a constructive outlet for young people and serve as a bridge between communities.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Governor expressed that the tournament is more than just a football event; it is a means to unite residents, engage youth, and provide a platform for raw talent to flourish. Governor Lelelit stated, “We want to see discipline, teamwork, and peace spread from this field to every corner of Samburu.”

Additionally, Governor Lelelit announced that the winning team will receive a prize of Sh1 million, with the second and third teams being awarded Sh800,000 and Sh600,000, respectively. He also mentioned that the County government is seeking funds from the Kenya Devolution Support Program to construct a Sh600 million State-of-the-Art Stadium.

Jorum Lesiamito from Samburu North commended the initiative, noting that engaging youths in sports can reduce insecurity, particularly in areas such as Baragoi, where issues like banditry and cattle rustling are prevalent.

Organizers of the tournament revealed that 32 teams from the three constituencies in Samburu will participate in the week-long matches, culminating in a final match on Sunday. Local coaches and referees will supervise the games, while talent scouts will be present to identify promising players.
