Nairobi: More than 5,000 Gen Z youth in Eldoret took part in the ‘Kenyans for Kenyans’ initiative, a drive aimed at raising financial support and donating wheelchairs to vulnerable groups in Uasin Gishu County. Those present included Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, other political leaders, and artists.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event, held in Eldoret town and spearheaded by Obidan Dela in support of children living with cerebral palsy, also doubled as a civic engagement forum. Thousands of young people registered as voters with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC. Organizers said the turnout reflected growing political consciousness among the youth.
Oscar Sudi also led a fundraising drive to support at-risk groups, with special focus on persons living with disabilities. He urged people to support children with special needs, emphasizing the collective effort required from the government, well-wishers, and the community.
Governor Jonathan Chelilim commended Dela for championing the initiative and for leveraging his online platform to mobilize support and remind citizens that unity in service changes lives.
The youths present at the event remarked that social media has become a critical tool in mobilizing communities and rallying support for those in need. They highlighted how digital platforms enable faster coordination, wider reach, and real-time engagement during humanitarian drives. They urged more young people to use their platforms responsibly to drive positive change.
Digital creator and philanthropist Obidan Dela emphasized that the digital space has made it easier to reach well-wishers and pool resources. ‘The digital era gives us a platform to connect, raise funds and bring hope to vulnerable groups across the country,’ Dela said.
Rider and philanthropist Almasi Samuel echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of using technology not only for entertainment but also for social impact. They noted that the digital space offers an opportunity to address real community challenges, spanning health, education, and welfare.
Philanthropist Kama Jigos added that initiatives like ‘Kenyans for Kenyans’ prove that online creativity can be channeled into service, challenging youths to turn influence into action that uplifts vulnerable groups.
Organizers stated that the ‘Kenyans for Kenyans’ initiative will continue to partner with local leaders and groups to reach more vulnerable households in the country.
